Fresh off capturing her second career WTA 125 title, Alex Eala quickly made the 118-mile trip to London to prepare for an even bigger challenge ahead.
After outlasting Nicola Bartuncova in a gripping three-set final that lasted two hours and 38 minutes on Sunday, the newly crowned Lexus Birmingham Open champion has just a single day to recover before returning to action on Tuesday at the 2026 Queen’s Club Championships.
Eala opens her campaign against veteran Zhang Shuai in the first round of the WTA 500 event, also known as the HSBC Championships.
The 37-year-old Zhang, currently ranked No. 64 in the world, once reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 22 in 2023.
She has also been a force in doubles, climbing as high as No. 2 in the world and winning Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and US Open.
Zhang has also shown strong form on grass courts in England, highlighted by a Wimbledon singles quarterfinal appearance and a doubles final run.
Both players were eliminated in the first round of the French Open earlier this season.
Prior to Roland Garros, they also competed in the 2026 Internationaux de Strasbourg, where Zhang reached the quarterfinals while Eala bowed out in the opening round.
Zhang had to battle through qualifying to secure her spot in the main draw of this week’s Queen’s Club Championships, defeating Heather Watson of Great Britain, 6-3, 6-4, on Sunday.
Beyond the immediate goal of advancing in the tournament, Eala will also carry added motivation heading into Tuesday’s clash.
A win over Zhang could set up a potential second-round showdown with sixth seed Iva Jovic—a rematch between the two close friends who met at the French Open last May, where Jovic came out on top in straight sets.
