Rising star Jonas Sultan (12-3) faces the biggest challenge of his young career, as he is set to defend his IBF Intercontinental Super Flyweight championship against former world champion Sonny Boy Jaro (43-13-5) on Sunday, March 19, at the Makati Cinema Square in Makati City.
The 25-year-old ALA Boxing standout, who stopped Makazole Tete to claim the belt last December, will make his first title defense. “Zorro” will be facing the former world champion Jaro, who has won his last nine fights.
According to Shape Up Boxing Promotions head honcho Anson Tiu Co, the fight will be a very important one for the two prized fighters.
“Yung laban nila ay kapuwang importante sa bawat isa. Naniniwala akong ito ay isang statement fight para sa kanila,” he told Tiebreaker Times.
“For Sultan, it’s to prove that he is a world-caliber fighter. And for Sonny Boy, kung gaano pa ka-bagsik pa siya sa larangan ng boxing despite his age.”
ALA Boxing head coach Edito Villamor echoed the same sentiment for the resident of Cebu City, promising that his fighter will be at his best come fight night.
“Mahalaga ito kay Jonas para sa kanyang career. If he wins this fight against Jaro na former world champion, aangat ang kanyang pangalan sa larangan ng boxing. Pinaghandaan talaga ng team ng maigi ang laban na ito,” Villamor added.
In the feature bouts, the gutsy Richard Pumicpic (18-8-2) will look to redeem himself from his decision loss to Cesar Juarez in Mexico as he takes on on ALA Boxing’s Roli Gasca (23-7-1). Cris Ganosa (12-0) and Edward Heno (9-0-4) will also put their unblemished records on the line as they fight for the vacant Philippine Boxing Federation Light Flyweight title.
