Nikola Jovic promised to bounce back and help Serbia secure the gold medal next time around shortly after the team’s loss to Germany in the final round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 last Sunday.
Jovic, who was expected to step up in the absence of Serbian superstar and two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, was limited to just nine points and eight rebounds as the Eagles were defeated by the Mannschaft, 83-77, in the gold medal match at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
“I really want to win gold. We gave everything we had, and we didn’t succeed. I’m sure we’ll get it next time,” said the 20-year-old Jovic.
The incoming Miami Heat sophomore, however, mentioned that the team is still grateful to come out of the FIBA World Cup with a silver medal hanging around their necks.
“It means a lot. Every medal means a lot to us. Being a small country, we embrace everything we get. I think we took it. Maybe we’re not first, but maybe next time,” said Jovic.
Jovic expressed that he relished his first-ever stint on the world stage and noted that basketball around the world has taken a significant leap.
“You can see how many countries can play ball now, especially at a high level. I think it’s going to get bigger and better,” said Jovic, who averaged 10.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in eight games played.
He also added, “It was more of a personal experience. Just being with these guys was amazing. Seeing them was unbelievable. They helped me become a better person, that’s it.”
