Another year, another Warrior walking away.
This time, it’s Rainer Maga who has parted ways with University of the East, transferring to University of the Philippines.
Despite the arrival of new head coach Chris Gavina, the trend of student-athletes departing from UE continues.
Incoming fourth-year sniper Wello Lingolingo, though saddened by the exit of yet another teammate, urged the community to reflect on Maga’s time in Recto with appreciation rather than disappointment.
“It’s his decision at i-respect na lang natin. Hindi naman natin masisi yung tao kung ganun yung nararamdaman niya,” said Lingolingo.
“Ako, I’m happy for him.”
Maga only played one season for the Red Warriors, where he averaged 8.13 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.13 assists per game.
He, Lingolingo, and Precious Momowei formed the core of last season’s UE squad that nearly broke through to the Final Four.
Now representing different universities, Lingolingo still hopes for nothing but success for his close friend at UP.
“Sana, mag-perform siya sa bago niyang school. As a friend, sana masaya siya sa mga naging desisyon niya at sana hindi siya magsisi,” said the 21-year-old guard from Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte.
“I’m happy for him at I wish nothing but the best.”
Despite the emotional farewell, Lingolingo remains focused on his mission: leading UE to the top of the UAAP Season 87 Men’s 3×3 Basketball Tournament.
Just like last year, the Red Warriors are in strong contention. At the end of Day 3, they held a 3-2 record — tied for second place alongside Adamson and UST.
After finishing as runners-up last season, Lingolingo feels determined to deliver a long-awaited collegiate gold medal for UE in 3×3 basketball.
“Sobrang laki kasi pinapalaro rin kami dito para makuha yung kumpyansa namin. 3×3, ibang laro talaga. Sobrang fast-paced. Gina-grab lang namin yung opportunity na ito,” said Lingolingo, who currently leads the tournament with 19 deuces in five games.
