Another Red Warrior Turns Maroon: Rainer Maga transfers to UP

Another Red Warrior has turned Maroon.

Rainer Maga is preparing to join University of the Philippines after an impressive one-year stint with University of the East.

Maga averaged 8.13 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.13 assists per game for the Red Warriors last season.

A native of Davao City, Maga becomes the third Mindanaoan player to transfer to UP in recent weeks. He follows San Beda’s James Payosing from North Cotabato and Arvie Poyos from Jose Maria College, who also hails from Davao.

All three are expected to be eligible for UAAP Season 89.

Graduating from UP after Season 88 are the NUNS quintet of Harold Alarcon, Gerry Abadiano, Terrence Fortea, Janjan Felicilda, and Reyland Torres.

This move also continues a growing trend of UE standouts making the jump to UP.

Gani Stevens transferred to the Fighting Maroons two years ago, followed by Noy Remogat last year.

Earlier this year, UP also welcomed a talented group from UE’s women’s volleyball program — Casiey Dongallo, Jelai Gajero, Kizzie Madriaga, Shamel Fernandez, and Jenalyn Umayam — who all made the move last January.
