In a disheartening announcement on Tuesday morning (Manila time), the Duke women’s basketball program revealed that senior guard Vanessa De Jesus would miss the entire upcoming 2023-24 season due to a knee injury.
This news comes as a significant blow not only to the player herself but also to Blue Devils.
Throughout her three seasons at Duke, De Jesus has been a valuable asset on the court, making her absence felt in the coming season.
During her tenure at Duke, De Jesus has been a key player in the Blue Devils’ lineup, appearing in a total of 66 games with 18 starts.
Her contributions to the team have been noteworthy, with an average of 5.1 points and 2.0 assists per contest.
The 2022-23 campaign proved to be one of her most successful seasons, as she managed to achieve double-digit scoring figures on eight occasions. Notably, during a resounding 100-49 victory against Richmond, De Jesus tied her career-high with an impressive 17 points.
The Blue Devils finished with a 26-7 overall record last season.
De Jesus is coming off a successful debut with Gilas Women during the 2023 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup.
During the continental meet, the 5-foot-8 guard averaged 12.8 points, 3.2 assists, and 1.8 rebounds per game.
