UST’s Angge Poyos, Gboy de Vega crowned V-League MVPs


University of Santo Tomas’s Angge Poyos and Gboy De Vega were honored as the Most Valuable Players in the women’s and men’s divisions of the 2024 V-League Collegiate Challenge, respectively.

Poyos played a pivotal role in leading UST to the finals, emerging as the top scorer in the women’s division with an impressive total of 123 points. Her contributions included 106 attacks, nine kill blocks, and eight service aces.

Notably, Poyos also cracked the top 10 in several statistical categories, including spiking, serving, digging, and receiving, underscoring her all-around performance throughout the tournament.

At just 20 years old, Poyos, who hails from Balilihan, Bohol, ranked second in spiking with a remarkable success rate of 35.81 percent.

Additionally, she placed sixth in serving, averaging 0.28 service aces per set.

Her defensive skills were equally commendable, as she finished as the second-best receiver with a 31.41 efficiency rate and ranked tenth in digs, averaging 1.72 per set.

On the men’s side, Gboy De Vega and the Golden Spikers settled for a fourth-place finish after losing to National University in the bronze match.

De Vega’s performance was noteworthy; he finished as the second-best scorer in the tournament with 122 points, comprising 111 attacks, six blocks, and five aces.

His defensive skills shone as well, placing sixth in digging with an average of 1.28 digs per set and seventh in receiving with a 39.60 efficiency rate.

Poyos’s stellar performance earned her a spot on the women’s V-League Supreme Team, which included teammates Regina Jurado, who was recognized as the Best Opposite Spiker, Cassie Carballo as the Best Setter, Em Banagua as the Best Middle Blocker, and Bernadett Pepito as the Best Libero.

Jurado herself was the fourth-ranked scorer of the tournament, amassing 98 points through 78 attacks, 12 blocks, and eight aces. Her spiking ability stood out, making her the top spiker with a 35.94 percent success rate, in addition to ranking fifth in serving and eighth in blocking.

Cassie Carballo, the reigning UAAP Best Setter, led the league in setting with an impressive average of 3.90 assists per set. She also ranked third in serving, averaging 0.31 aces per set.

Meanwhile, Bernadett Pepito excelled in defense, finishing second in digging with an average of 3.48 digs per set.

Wielyn Estoque from the College of St. Benilde and Chen Tagaod of Far Eastern University were recognized as the Best Outside Spikers.

Estoque finished just behind Poyos in scoring with 116 points, while Tagaod contributed 67 attacks, 10 blocks, and 10 aces to place fifth overall.

Estoque also excelled statistically, ranking sixth in spiking and fourth in blocking, while Tagaod was second in serving and seventh in spiking.

Middle blockers Zamantha Nolaso and Em Banagua placed second and third in the blocking category, averaging 0.85 and 0.52 blocks per set, respectively.

De Vega spearheaded the V-League Men’s Supreme Team alongside teammate Paul Colinares and Joshua Magalaman from De La Salle University, both of whom were recognized as Best Middle Blockers.

The Best Outside Spikers included Jelord Talisayan of Far Eastern University and Chris Hernandez, also from La Salle.

Colinares emerged as a standout in the league, topping total blocks with 36 and maintaining an average of 0.96 blocks per set.

Magalaman followed closely behind as the fourth-best in blocking with an average of 0.76 per set.

Hernandez ranked sixth in scoring with 107 points, while Talisayan finished with 96 points, showcasing their consistent contributions throughout the tournament.

Moreover, Talisayan’s performance was commendable as he also ranked fifth in serving, seventh in spiking, fourth in receiving, and eighth in digging.

Meanwhile, De Vega’s teammate Dryx Saavedra finished fifth overall in scoring among opposite spikers, accumulating 108 points, while Jerico Adajar led the league in setting with an average of 4.53 assists per set.

Menard Guerrero rounded out the accolades by leading the league in receiving with a 58.18 percent efficiency rate and placing second in digs with an average of 2.38 per set.
