UP falls to Sydney to close out WUBS run


University of the Philippines suffered a 96-77 defeat to the University of Sydney on Sunday at the National Yoyogi Stadium Second Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan, in the 2025 World University Basketball Series.

The Fighting Maroons stayed within striking distance up until the second quarter.

With the game tied at 42-all, the Australians unleashed a quick six-point burst to seize the lead for good.

Sydney took full control in the third quarter, erupting for 23 points.

Iggy Mitchell spearheaded the run with 11 of his game-high 25 points during the frame, pushing the margin to 71-57 entering the final period.

The Australians’ lead swelled to as many as 27 points, 87-60, late in the game.

UP, meanwhile, continued to struggle from beyond the arc for the second straight outing, hitting just 6-of-37 from three-point range.

Mitchell also tallied seven rebounds, five steals, and four assists for Sydney.

Robbie Moore chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds, while Chandler Skelton and Mitch Smith added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

All Sydney players found the scoring column as they moved on to face National Chengchi University in the battle for fifth place.

UP was paced by Terrence Fortea with 18 points on four triples.

Chicco Briones and Francis Nnoruka followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively, with Nnoruka also hauling down nine rebounds.

Gani Stevens continued to impress with eight points and eight boards.
