UP faces major setback as Favour Onoh sidelined for season

University of the Philippines is gearing up to maintain its momentum in the UAAP Season 87 women’s basketball tournament, despite a significant setback in their lineup.

The Fighting Maroons will be without standout inside presence Favour Onoh.

Te reigning Rookie of the Year has been ruled out for the entire season due to ongoing recovery from injuries to both knees.

UP had initially hoped for Onoh’s return, even later in the season. But after careful consideration, the decision was made to prioritize her long-term health and career.

Head coach Paul Ramos, who led the Fighting Maroons to their first playoff appearance since 2008, explained the decision-making process.

“‘Di na talaga aabot. It’s more of a decision agreed upon by us – the coaching staff, team management, doctors, and Favour herself. We believe this is the right thing to do,” Ramos stated.

“Ayaw naming ipilit na i-line-up siya, then if she’s not at full-strength, masasayang yung isang playing year niya. We didn’t want to risk anything anymore.”

Onoh’s absence will undoubtedly be felt on the court. Last season, the 6-foot-4 Nigerian center averaged impressive per-game statistics of 11.0 points, 14.9 rebounds, 2.9 blocks, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 assists, leading all rookies.

Her chemistry with Louna Ozar, Kaye Pesquera, and Christie Bariquit propelled the Fighting Maroons to a remarkable 6-0 start, including a memorable victory over National University, the seven-time defending champion.

As the team prepares for the upcoming season, Onoh will remain a vital presence, albeit from the sidelines.

“That’s a given. She’ll still be with us sa games, sa practices, sa lahat,” assured Ramos, emphasizing Onoh’s continued involvement and support for her teammates.

The team’s resolve is now stronger than ever, with Onoh’s absence serving as additional motivation for her teammates.

“As always, we choose to look at the positive things coming out of this. Ngayon, ang masasabi natin, the girls will be more inspired to play because they now have Favour to play for. And they love Favour,” Ramos said, highlighting the unity and determination within the squad.

With Onoh sidelined, the Fighting Maroons will look to key players like Achrissa Maw and Shanina Tapawan to step up and fill the void in the paint.

Meanwhile, Louna Ozar and Camille Nolasco, who have been cleared from national team duties, will be ready to contribute immediately.

New recruit Alex Mendoza, a Filipino-Australian, also joins the roster.

Despite the challenges, UP feels determined to build on its recent success and make another strong push in the UAAP.

The Fighting Maroons remain focused and united, ready to take on the season with renewed purpose and a dedication to their injured star.
