Paul Desiderio steered the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons to their third consecutive win as they trounced the University of Perpetual Help System-Dalta Altas, 77-63, in the 12th Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup presented by Chooks-to-Go, Friday evening, at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.
Desiderio scored six points in the Maroons’ 15-2 run in the final frame, which broke the game wide-open. The Gilas Cadet finished with 20 points that include five three-pointers, while Gelo Vito added 13 points and 14 rebounds for UP.
After losing their first three games of the tournament, the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons have turned the tides around and won three consecutive games.
The Maroons won by a 14-point margin. However, UP head coach Bo Perasol is far from impressed with his team’s victory.
“This is some of the wins that I don’t like. I think that we didn’t exert too much effort. It was good that we were able to come back in the end. But for us to be able to win at a higher level we must have to be consistent with what we do,” he explained.
Edgar Charcos had 11 points, four assists, and four steals for Perpetual, while Tonton Peralta and Julius Tiburcio had 10 apiece.
UP look to continue their fiery streak on May 28, Monday, against the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals. Perpetual will try to notch their first win on May 22, Tuesday, versus the Mapua University Cardinals.
With Taane Samuel dominating the inside, the De La Salle University Green Archers extended their winning streak to four as they destroyed the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 83-51, in the third game of the evening.
Samuel led La Salle with 28 points and nine rebounds in 17 minutes of play, while Mark Dyke contributed 13 points and 10 boards for the Green Archers, who now sit comfortably at the top of Group A with a 4-0 standing.
Meanwhile, the Generals — who suffered their fourth straight loss in the tournament — were top scored by Ichie Altamirano with nine points.
The San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags turned to Allyn Bulanadi as they edged out the University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers, in a 79-71 outing.
With the Tigers crawling their way back into the game, it was Bulanadi who delivered to deny UST from completing their comeback. Bulanadi scored 23 points with an impressive 86 percent of shooting from the field.
RK Ilagan scored 17 points for Baste, while John Calma added 10 points and 17 boards.
Marvin Lee led the undermanned Tigers with 23 points. Renzo Subido notched 16 markers, while Zachy Huang added 12. The Tigers, who fell to 0-2, only fielded in nine players.
The College of St. Benilde Blazers booked their second win of the tournament as they out-muscled the Cj Perez-backed Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates, 92-68, in the first game of the day.
Clement Leutcheu powered the Blazers with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Yankie Haruna scored 14 points, while Unique Naboa and Carlo Young added 11 points apiece.
Jasper Ayaay led the Pirates — who currently stand at 1-4 in Group B — with 14 points, while reigning Most Valuable Player CJ Perez only scored 8 points on subpar 2-for-13 shooting.
Colegio de San Juan de Letran’s Jeremiah Taladua defeated University of the Philippines’ Fighting Maroons’ JJ Espanola, 16-9, in the Hanes 1-on-1 King of the Hardcourt.
Taladua will battle De La Salle University’s Miguel Corteza in the next round of the tournament.
