Another one of Mapua University’s prodigal sons is coming home.
Cyril Gonzales has left the University of the Philippines and is set to be reunited with Randy Alcantara.
The Fighting Maroons bid farewell to Gonzales on Saturday evening during a dinner.
“The past few years have shown me what it’s like to be a true Fighting Maroon. UP wasn’t just a phase but a piece of my heart,” read the 6-foot guard’s post.
“My thoughts are filled with a deep sense of respect and thankfulness as I sit here, realizing that my chapter fighting for the Maroons is coming to a close.”
This will mark Gonzales’ return to the Cardinals after six years.
After a stellar rookie season at Mapua that saw him average 9.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.4 steals, he transferred to UP during the pandemic to join Goldwin Monteverde.
In UAAP Season 85, he played in 17 games, averaging 5.12 points in 15 minutes of action.
However, his minutes dropped in Season 86, playing just 8 minutes and 12 seconds in 11 games played.
Still, he remains grateful to UP for the chance to play in the UAAP.
“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who allowed their story to become a part of mine. To my teammates and coaches, who equally shared a passion for the game and became my second family, I will always be indebted. Despite all the highs and lows, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have become part of the rich history of this prestigious university,” he continued.
“Everyone’s togetherness has made all the difference, and for that, I will always be grateful.”
Now 23 years old, he will get to settle some unfinished business at Mapua.
Gonzales will sit out NCAA Season 100.
Meanwhile, Gonzales is the second player to leave UP after Luis Pablo transferred to La Salle earlier this week. Also de-committing from UP were Jared Bahay and Chris Hubilla.
