UAAP Season 77 Judo Championships Men’s Results and Recap


The UAAP judo championship tournament format is different compared to the majority of the league.

Since 2005, the judo tournament does not employ the team round-robin format. Instead, UAAP Judo utilizes a bracket system wherein each judoka placement in a bracket is based on seeding. Moreover, judokas coming from the same school are seeded away from each other in the earlier stages of the tournament. Finally, fallen judokas from the earlier rounds can still compete for a bronze medal. The fallen judokas from the earlier matches are moved to another bracket that culminates to the 2 bronze medal matches.

Here we take a look at the men’s judo tournament for the 77th Season of the UAAP:

 


 

Men’s Heavyweight (+100 kg) Division

The number of judokas in this division is set at five. In this format, UST’s Kazuki Masaoka and ADMU’s Matthew Simon Jao, competed in the 1st bracket while UPD’s Luis Benigno Agustin & Brian Dominic Azarcon and ADMU’s Rafael Cadiente competed in a round-robin style tournament in the 2nd pool.

Men’s Heavyweight:

ADMU Senior Jao dominates heavyweight tournament

1st bracket:
Matthew Simon Jao (ADMU) defeated Kazuki Masaoka (UST) via an oseikami (pin) with :34 remaining

Pool #2:
ADMU’s Rafael Cadiente (1-0) defeated UPD’s Luis Benigno Agustin (0-1) via an ippon by way of an oseikami (pin) with 3:55 remaining

UPD’s Luis Benigno Agustin (1-1) defeated UPD’s Brian Dominic Azarcon (0-1) via an ippon by way of a seionage with 1:59 remaining

ADMU’s Rafael Cadiente (2-0) defeated UPD’s Brian Dominic Azarcon (0-2) via an ippon by way of a sweep with 1:13 remaining
With two wins, Rafael Cadiente advanced to the finals to face-off against teammate and senior Matthew Simon Jao in the gold medal match. With a 1-1 record, Luis Benigno Agustin automatically won the 1st bronze medal. Brian Dominic Azarcon, on the other hand, had to face UST’s Kazuki Masaoka for the 2nd bronze medal match.

Men’s Half-heavyweight (-100 kg) Division

UP’s Bautista outpoints UST judoka to secure the Half-heavyweight division

The number of judokas competing is set at eight. The format for the half-heavyweight division tournament is a sudden death 8-man tournament.

The number of judokas competing is set at eight. The format for the half-heavyweight division tournament is a sudden death 8-man tournament.

The number of judokas competing is set at 10. The format for the half-middleweight division tournament is a sudden death 10-man tournament with six judokas receiving byes in the elimination round. DLSU’s Vince David, ADMU’s Hermoge Arayata, ADMU’s Ramon Santiago and DLSU’s Lloyd Abucayan faced-off to advance into the quarterfinals.

Men’s Lightweight (-73 kg) Division

DLSU’s Regala pins his way to win Lightweight Division

The number of judokas competing is set at 11. The format for the lightweight division tournament is a sudden death 11-man tournament with five judokas receiving byes in the elimination round. UST’s Brian Llamas, ADU’s Felix Colbera, DLSU’s Antoni Gosalvev, UE’s Omhar Sabido, ADMU’s Benedict Clemente, and DLSU’s Mikhail Regala faced-off to advance into the quarterfinals.

UAAP Season 77 Men’s Judo Championships: the Aftermath

In computing the winner of the overall championship for men’s judo, the number of medals received is the basis in the computation. The final medal count is as follows:

While the Ateneo Blue Judokas may have bagged the most gold medals, the UST Tiger Judokas attained the most medals translating into more points to bag the Men’s Judo Overall championship. The UP Fighting Maroons grabbed 3rd place while the DLSU Green Judokas finished the tournament at 4th.
