UAAP 84: Well-oiled Ateneo machine stops Adamson’s four-game streak

Chew Daves enjoyed a breakout performance as he helped Ateneo de Manila University prevail over Adamson University, 91-57, in the second round of the UAAP Season 84 Men’s Basketball Tournament, Tuesday night, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

In 14:30 minutes of action, Daves produced 18 points, 14 of which came in the fourth quarter, two rebounds, one assist, and one steal to help the Blue Eagles finish the game strongly and seal their 38th consecutive victory as well as end the Soaring Falcons’ four-game winning streak.

Rookie guard Forthsky Padrigao then sank a three-pointer to give the Blue Eagles their biggest lead at 91-57 with 25 seconds left on the game clock.

“A lot of credit has to go to our coaching staff but also a lot of credit has to go to our bench,” said Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin. “Chew stepped up over here. He had the game of his career so far. This is what we want to see.”

Beforehand, up by 20-17 after the first quarter, the Blue Eagles locked down the Soaring Falcons in the second period and limited them to just seven points. Ateneo led as much as 38-20 thanks to center Ange Kouame’s power move in the paint with 1:31 remaining before the halftime break to seize control of the contest.

The Blue Eagles then saw their lead extend to as much as 59-32 courtesy of a Gian Mamuyac basket with 2:28 left in the third quarter. However, Mamuyac was forced out of the action with 1:15 remaining after he got into an accident with Adamson’s Cedrick Manzano.

“I think the second quarter was really telling in this game because Nash always does a good job and they came out exceptionally well-prepared and exceptionally motivated in the first quarter,” said Baldwin. “Second quarter, I think our defense… everybody that went out there really dug in.”

Kouame had 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and three steals in 25:58 minutes of action. Chris Koon had eight points and seven rebounds.

The Blue Eagles had 28 points off turnovers, 15 second-chance points, 39 perimeter points, and 50 bench points as well as 15 steals. In contrast, the Soaring Falcons committed 24 turnovers and only had four turnover points, six second-chance points, 19 perimeter points, and 22 bench points.

Jerom Lastimosa led Adamson with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field with four turnovers. Cedrick Manzano was also limited to just eight points and six rebounds as he was plagued with fouls all game long.
