Louie Alas might be the happiest man right now.
Alas started Friday with a piece of totally great news, as he can now call himself a grandpa following the birth of his first grandchild, Kamy, from son Junjun and wife in the morning.
“Sarap ng may apo, pare,” he beamed.
And the evening later, his Phoenix Pulse Fuel Masters mustered a dominant performance and obliterated the Blackwater Elite, 114-95, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
“Di namin ine-expect ‘yung ganitong outcome kasi actually, worried nga kami… Flawless yung depensa ng Blackwater versus Rain or Shine [last Wednesday which they won 111-99],” said Alas.
The game was never in doubt the moment Phoenix built a 31-9 to start the match. They would go on to lead by as many as 37 points, 85-48, with less than five minutes left in the third canto.
“Dito pa naman kami di nakaka-shoot ng three points sa venue na to. Medyo tough yung ring dito. I don’t know kung ano nakain ng mga shooters ko. Fifty-six-percent yung field goal namin nung first half.
“So, that’s the game,” said Alas, whose wards finished with a 53.2 percent clip from the field.
With such an excellent showing that sent the Elite to 1-3, the Fuel Masters have improved to 4-0, thus solidifying their hold of the top spot of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup standings.
“Looking for fifth, hopefully against NLEX. We just have to keep on working,” said the seasoned mentor.
But for now, Alas will set aside his coaching duties, and will put on his grandfather’s cap as he will be driving straight to Las Piñas all the way from Antipolo just for his “apo.”
“Tuloy kami ngayon ng wife ko.”
