Squaring off against Canlas fired Oczon up

Migs Oczon was firing on all cylinders for College of St. Benilde.

The 21-year-old guard scored 19 points for the Blazers on an efficient 53.8-percent from the field together with a rebound and an assist.

For Oczon, he was just repaying the trust of his head coach Charles Tiu for giving him the green light to shoot.

“Andon naman yung trust niya [Coach Charles Tiu]. He knows that I put in the work like I said kanin,” said Oczon who led CSB in scoring in their 78-69 win against San Beda.

“And parang alam niya na na ayun yung laro ko is to shoot. I know na malaki yung tiwala niya sakin in terms of shooting the ball. I’m trying to repay him naman sa trust na binigay niya sakin.”

The former National University guard was unconscious in the payoff period, scoring 11 markers in the final five minutes of play — not missing a single bucket as he went 4-of-4.

Not taking all the credit, Oczon gave one to his teammates as they are the ones boosting his confidence in making all his shots.

“As we all know slow start ako. But my teammates keep reminding me, my coaches keep reminding me, yung mga tao sa bench sabi papasok din yan. Just keep on shooting. Ayun yung nagencourage sakin na, sige lang,” said the former Gilas Youth player.

“Parang medyo nagging flat yung fourth quarter namin and parang feel ko kailangan kami makascore so parang nung may tyansa na kong itira yung bola pa, tinake ko na yung chance,” he continued.

“Naging confident ako sa shot ko kasi nagtrabaho naman ako sa off-season, so nagpayoff lang din siya.

The 6-foot guard also gave credit to his opponent Jame Kwekuteye who played his heart out despite the loss.

Kwekuteye scored a career-high 28 points on 42-percent shooting with eight boards, an assist and two steals.

“As a competitor, i-embrace mo lang yung challenge. James is a very very good player. Kahit na-contest mo na malaki pa rin yung chance na ma-shoot yung bola,” said Oczon about the NCAA Season 95 Mythical team member.

“So ako, yung challenge na inilahad niya sakin facing him parang ine-embrace ko rin kasi he’s one of the top players sa league.”

And it will be a treat once more when they face off once more in the second round.
