The league table of the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament has been nothing short of confusing.
After Sunday’s action, there are two teams who share the second seed and another set of two teams who are the sixth seed but that doesn’t mean the third and fifth seeds are in stable ground.
The FEU Lady Tamaraws, the number three team, and the Adamson Lady Falcons, the number five team, can both either go up or down in the standings on one simple whim.
Amid the confusion, however, is a glaring constant and it’s the defending champions De La Salle University Lady Spikers.
The Lady Spikers were perfect this week and remained atop the league with an 8-2 record securing themselves of at least a playoff for one of the spots in the Final Four.
And in the middle of that perfection is Kim Kianna Dy.
La Salle’s belle of an opposite hitter was the offensive focal point in both of the Lady Spikers’ victories against the UP Lady Maroons and FEU Lady Tamaraws, on her way to winning the SMART Sports/UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week.
And although the wins against the Lady Maroons and the Lady Tamaraws are as far apart as Diliman and Sampaloc, Dy seemed to be a delicate pendulum in the middle of the chaos.
Dy was solid in the Lady Spikers’ three-set sweep of University of the Philippines, 25-15, 25-19, 25-19, with 14 points, five of which were aces and four were blocks, in an uneventful game La Salle easily shrugged off.
It was against the Lady Tamaraws’ however that Dy showed a little more of her magic when she put up 18 points in a five-set win, 25-17, 21-25, 16-25, 25-20, 15-5.
Dy, despite starting dormant against FEU, stepped up and scored four of La Salle’s 10 points, five came from the Lady Tamaraws’ errors, in the fifth set.
“Yung mindset namin coming into the fifth set was dapat mauna kami, kasi FEU is very aggressive so pag dumikit mahihirapan kami,” said Dy. “So game plan talaga is unahan sila.”
After scoring a total of 32 points this week, Dy went from 11th in the total points list to sixth leapfrogging Ateneo’s Jho Maraguinot, teammate Majoy Baron, Adamson’s Jema Galanza and Mylene Paat, and University of the East’s Mary Ann Mendrez.
