Sherwin Meneses’ short but sweet reign at NU ends with gratitude

Sherwin Meneses’ stint at National University may have lasted only a single season, but it was one that ended in golden fashion.

The decorated mentor, who took over the Lady Bulldogs in the off-season of UAAP Season 87, penned a heartfelt message to NU after leading the squad to the women’s volleyball championship earlier this year.

He will be replaced by former NUNS Lady Bullpups head coach Regine Diego.

Meneses, known for his steady hand and championship pedigree, immediately delivered results for the Lady Bulldogs.

NU posted a strong 12-2 record in the elimination round, secured a convincing Final Four victory over Far Eastern University, and then dethroned La Salle in two games to reclaim the UAAP crown.

His lone year with the Lady Bulldogs was also symbolic, as he guided the final UAAP campaign of NU’s iconic core — Bella Belen, Alyssa Solomon, Sheena Toring, and Erin Pangilinan — closing an era for the program.

Following the season, Meneses even reunited with one of his players, drafting Toring to his Premier Volleyball League club Creamline.

Despite the championship success, NU management opted not to renew Meneses’ contract after just one year.

In a heartfelt statement, the former national team coach expressed nothing but gratitude to the institution and its community.

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to National University, the management, and the entire NU family for the trust and opportunity you have given me to serve as Head Coach. It has truly been one of the greatest honors of my career to work with such passionate and hardworking athletes, and to be part of a community that lives by discipline, heart, and excellence,” Meneses wrote.

He also left words of encouragement for his former wards, saying, “To the players, remember this — always give your best, chase success with everything you have, and keep moving forward. There is no turning back—only chances to grow, to learn, and to become better every single day. Believe in yourselves, trust the process, and play with your whole heart.”

Finally, Meneses extended his support to his successor, Coach Regine Diego, expressing optimism about NU’s future.

“I also want to extend my best wishes to Coach Regine as she takes on this new journey with the team. I am excited to see you all soar even higher under her guidance.”
