Marc Alexander Lim has finally won the gold medal he’s been dreaming of in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games at the Chroy Changvar Convention Center on Sunday.
Lim overcame Vietnam’s Dang Dinh Tung in the men’s ne-waza nogi 69kg division, marking his first triumph after winning silver in the 2019 Philippine games and bronze in Vietnam last year.
Lim, who hails from Davao and is widely regarded as one of the Philippines’ best jiu-jitsu fighters, expressed his joy and disbelief at finally winning gold.
“I still can’t believe that I finally did it,” he said.
Lim’s triumph came as Meggie Ochoa, another highly touted Filipino jiu-jitsu fighter, suffered a knee-bar submission defeat to Cambodian star Jessa Khan, settling for the silver medal in the women’s ne-waza nogi 52kg division.
Despite the setback, Ochoa still managed to put up a valiant effort against her opponent.
Other Filipino jiu-jitsu grapplers also earned medals in the tournament.
The mixed show pair of Ian Patrick Gurrobat and Lesly Gomez Romero, as well as the mixed duo of Estie Gay Liwanen and Christopher Gallego, both won bronze medals.
