San Sebastian in search of new leader, ‘godfather’ to support basketball program

San Sebastian College-Recoletos’ seniors basketball team is now searching for a new “godfather” after ending its partnership with its backer.

In a statement, Rev. Fr. Rafael B. Pecson, OAR, expressed his gratitude to Joseph Ronquillo and his management team for their support during the Golden Stags’ NCAA Season 100 campaign.

“The San Sebastian College-Recoletos community would like to thank Mr. Ronquillo for all the support, encouragement, and resources he provided for our Season 100 campaign. While we fell short of our mission, it was a great ride with the management team he formed, and we deeply appreciate it,” said Pecson.

“We wish Mr. Ronquillo success in his future endeavors,” he added.

Also gone is one-year head coach Arvin Bonleon, who steered the Golden Stags to a 6-12 finish, placing ninth in the standings.

With Bonleon and Ronquillo’s departure, the San Sebastian community now eagerly awaits the arrival of a new benefactor and coaching staff who can steer the team back to championship contention.

“We are looking for someone who can bring fresh ideas and resources that are vital in enhancing the capabilities of each member of the team as we strive for excellence,” the school stated.

“The school community and its fans are eager to hear the roar of ‘Bravo Baste!’ once again, and hopefully, we can make that happen in the coming season.”

San Sebastian last won an NCAA championship in 2009, during the era of the famed “Pinatubo Trio” of Calvin Abueva, Ian Sangalang, and Ronald Pascual—all hailing from Pampanga.

Before that, the Stags enjoyed a dominant stretch in the ’90s, highlighted by a five-peat from 1993 to 1997, featuring stars like Chris Bade, Django Rivera, Nap Hatton, and Melchor Teves.

The Stags also reigned supreme in 1988 and 1989, thanks to the creative plays of Eugene Quilban and the high-flying dunks of Bong Alvarez.

Overall, San Sebastian is a proud owner of 12 NCAA championships, with its first title dating back to 1973.

Now, the Stags hope to reclaim their former glory and bring championship basketball back to Recto.
