When the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Nations League made its debut in the Philippines the previous year, one of the teams that caught the attention of local volleyball fans was Slovenia.
Thanks to the team’s spirited performances, the players’ charm, and their energy on the court, led by emerging outside hitter Rok Možič, the Balkan squad witnessed a growth in their fanbase heading into this year’s edition of the VNL.
Upon their arrival in the country earlier this week, the team received a warm welcome at the airport, complete with Filipino goodies and friendly greetings, which delighted the 21-year-old wing spiker.
Možič expressed his gratitude, saying, “It was crazy. I would like to thank everyone who came to the airport and to all those who came here to support us. I really appreciate it and I hope to see you tomorrow against Italy.”
Recognizing the significance of their remaining matches, the young star, who plays professionally for Verona Volley in Italy, was also relieved that they had overcome their setback after a disappointing loss to fellow Europeans Poland.
“Yesterday, against Poland – the number one team in the world – we played well and put up a good fight, but it wasn’t enough. Unfortunately, they defeated us.”
He continued, “And today, it wasn’t an easy match against China. They improved in the third and fourth sets, but we managed to secure three important points for ourselves.”
With several teams closely competing for the third to eighth positions, and only five spots remaining for the Final Round in Poland, the team guided by coach Gheorghe Cretu aims to replicate their strong performance in the upcoming match against their recent European rival, Italy, less than 24 hours from now, with the support of their newfound fan base.
“Italy is a formidable opponent. They are the reigning World Champions, one of the best teams in the world, and they play exceptional volleyball. However, we will give our best to win the match. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow and hope for the enthusiastic support of Filipino fans.”
