Returning Marck Espejo headlines PMNVT for AVC Cup


Marck Espejo will return to the national team.

The Incheon Korean Air-bound spiker headlines the 14 players that will represent the Philippines in the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Men which will be held from July 8 to 15 in Taiwan.

This will mark Espejo’s return to the national team since missing the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.

Also returning to the national team are Chu Njigha, and Kim Dayandante.

Completing the squad are Jau Umandal, Kim Malabunga, Madz Gampong, Lloyd Josafat, Ryan Ka, Steven Rotter, Vince Mangulabnan, Noel Kampton, and liberos Manuel Sumanguid and Vince Lorenzo.

Guiding the team will be head coach Sergio Veloso assisted by Odjie Mamon and Rommel Abella.

Part of the squad that flew to Taiwan are statistician Mark Alfafara, strength and conditioning coach Mel Samonte, and team manager Jerome Guhit. Also with the team is Rod Roque of University of the East.

In a roster provided by PNVF national team chairman Tony Boy Liao, the Philippines submitted 20 names. However, only 14 were part of the photo that Intal posted.

Missing are Bryan Bagunas, Ed Camposano, John Vic De Guzman, Jayvee Sumagaysay, Cyrus De Guzman, and Adrian Villados.

The Philippines is grouped with Mongolia and Macau in Pool D.

There are 17 nations participating in the regional competition. They are grouped into six pools with Pool A the lone one with just two countries.

The Philippines will first face Macau on July 9 before meeting Mongolia the next day.
