Arizona State floor general Remy Martin received a call from the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, Saturday morning (Manila time).
But it was not what he expected.
The 20-year-old Filipino-American, whose mother hails from the Philippines, guard shared on his Instagram account that the federation told him that he won’t be part of Gilas Pilipinas’ pool in the 2019 FIBA World Cup this August.
“Just received a call and I will not be representing the Philippines in the World Cup,” he said.
Last March, head coach Yeng Guiao expressed his interest in bringing in the 6-foot guard to his pool.
“We hope to invite him to the country so we can take a closer look,” said Guiao.
However, plans have been nixed. Well for this cycle at least.
Still, the 23 for 2023 Gilas Cadet is just honored to just be mentioned to play for his motherland. And he vows that he will be ready for the next Gilas cycle.
“It was an honor just to be mentioned,” his statement continued.
“I will always represent. Maybe, next time!”
In his sophomore year with the Sun Devils, Martin averaged 12.9 points, 5.0 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists.
He helped steer Arizona State to the semifinals of the Pac 12 (losing to Oregon) and the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship (losing to Buffalo).
