After three years at De La Salle University, Raven Gonzales has decided to turn pro.
The 6-foot-7 big man from Dagupan, Pangasinan, has signed with MPBL team Abra Weavers, opting to forgo his final two years of collegiate eligibility.
Gonzales informed the school’s management of his decision on Friday evening and shared the news with his teammates on Saturday.
His decision came as a surprise, as he was expected to be a key big man for the Green Archers’ frontline following the graduation of Kevin Quiambao. However, the 22-year-old felt the need to support his family, prompting his move to the professional ranks.
“After much reflection, I’ve made the difficult decision to move forward and play for the Abra Weavers, as I believe this is what’s best for me and my family at this point in our journey,” his statement to the team read.
“While this change is a significant step, please know that the La Salle spirit will always live within me, guiding me in everything I do moving forward.”
Raven, who carried his mother’s surname Gonzales during his final year at La Salle in UAAP Season 87, was deeply rooted in the La Salle system, having attended De La Salle-Zobel for high school before continuing his studies in Taft Avenue.
“I’ve been part of the La Salle system since I was in Grade 7, and throughout my journey, especially in college, it has been a time of my life that I will cherish forever. I am incredibly grateful to the La Salle community for the unwavering support, the invaluable lessons, and the countless memories that have shaped me into who I am today,” he said.
“The relationships I’ve built, the guidance I’ve received, and the sense of belonging within this institution have made an impact on my life. I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the La Salle managers, coaching staff, and the entire La Salle family for not only supporting me but also my family. Your encouragement has been a constant source of strength, and I will forever be grateful for the kindness and trust you have shown me and my loved ones throughout the years.”
Over the course of his UAAP career, Gonzales played in 44 games for the Green Archers, averaging 5.63 points and 2.68 rebounds, including 5.06 points and 3.56 rebounds in his final year.
Gonzales is the second Green Archer to turn pro and join the Abra Weavers this off-season, following CJ Austria. Joshua David has also signed with the Weavers.
Gonzales closed his statement by expressing his gratitude to La Salle: “Thank you once again for everything. Animo La Salle!”
