A new international opportunity awaits the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League after it forged a partnership with the East Asia Super League, paving the way for reigning champion Abra Solid North to compete in the 2026-27 season.
The agreement marks the MPBL’s first formal partnership with an international basketball organization and gives Abra a chance to measure up against some of Asia’s top professional clubs in the EASL’s home-and-away competition.
MPBL founder and chairman Manny Pacquiao welcomed the partnership as another step toward expanding opportunities for Filipino basketball players and teams.
“This is a proud moment for the MPBL,” said Pacquiao. “From the beginning, our vision has been to create opportunities for Filipino basketball to continue growing. This partnership aligns perfectly with that vision.
“We are excited to join forces with the EASL and look forward to this new chapter together.”
MPBL commissioner Emmer Oreta, meanwhile, viewed the agreement as recognition of the league’s development and its growing presence in the Asian basketball scene.
“This partnership is a reflection of the MPBL’s growing stature, not just in the Philippines, but across Asia,” Oreta said.
“It is also a tribute to the dedication of our teams in maintaining a strong, competitive standard here at home.”
Abra earned its place on the international stage after making a rapid rise since entering the MPBL in 2024.
The Weavers captured the league championship in just their second season, establishing themselves as one of the league’s premier teams.
EASL CEO Henry Kerins welcomed both the MPBL and Abra to the regional competition, saying the partnership strengthens the league’s presence in the Philippines.
“We are delighted to welcome both the MPBL and the Abra Weavers to the EASL family,” Kerins said.
“Abra has quickly established itself as one of the Philippines’ strongest clubs, and we’re excited to see them compete against Asia’s best.”
Abra will be among several newcomers to the 2026-27 EASL campaign, joining B.LEAGUE champion Nagasaki Velca, KBL finalist Goyang Sono Skygunners, Macau SAR champion Macau Hou Chon, and P. LEAGUE+ representative TSG GhostHawks.
EASL is yet to announce the full schedule, groupings, and Abra’s opening matchups, with details expected in the coming weeks.
