Rain or Shine fights back, keeps Globalport in cellar

Rain or Shine used a second half onslaught to turn the game around and frustrate Globalport, 116-94 Tuesday night in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Elasto Painters trailed by as much as 45-35 in the second period after Jay Washington hit a jumper but recovered behind Jeff Chan and Mo Charlo in the third quarter.

The duo combined for 19 points in the penultimate quarter alone where Rain or Shine out-scored Globalport, 35-21. A triple by Chan gave his team a 55-53 edge and kickstarted what eventually became a 27-17 stretch for the Elasto Painters to end the third quarter.

Rain or Shine then opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to push the lead up to 86-70 and put away the Batang Pier for good. Rain or Shine went on out-score Globalport 72-45 overall in the second half.

“We finally got some offensive rhythm in the second half. Masama yung offense namin in the first half but we just tried to keep the game close,” Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao said.

“The pressure was on us. It took us two quarters to finally get rhythm.”

Five players scored in double-digits for Rain or Shine. Charlo finished with 18 points on 50 percent shooting and 12 rebounds. Chan finished with the same points, shooting 4-for-6 from long range.

“I am also happy Mo Charlo got his game going. He skipped practice yesterday because of food poisoning. He was kind of weak even before this game but it did not show during the game,” Guiao added.
