The Philippines collected four more gold medals in practical shooting at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in the much-anticipated return of the sport in the biennial spectacle, on Monday at the Eastern National Sport Training Center in Chonburi, Thailand.
After a mishap from the organizers, leading to the premature announcement of medallists on Sunday despite still having the finals on this day, the Filipinos, eventually and officially, went home with eight medals at the end of the three-day competitions.
Bannered by IPSC Handgun World Shoot champion in the standard division, Rolly Nathaniel Tecson, the Philippines reigned supreme in four of the eight events in the sport, returning since its staging in 2019.
Tecson bagged the gold in the same event in Chonburi with a cumulative total of 1,680.7889, ahead of compatriot and second-placed Khalil Viray, who ended with 1,625.2256.
Viray, though, would not go home with a medal due to the one-medal-per-country rule imposed by the organizers.
The Philippines swept the golds in the production optics with Edcel John Gino and Genesis Pible topping the men’s and the women’s sides, respectively.
Gino paced all shooters in the said event with 1,654.0344 points garnered throughout the three days, while Genesis Pible finished with the best score among the ladies with 1,293.7900.
Erin Micor completed the golden rush with 1,399.3154 points to take the women’s open title.
Four more medals completed the dominant outing for the Philippine team.
Evelyn Woods added a silver from the women’s production division; meanwhile, Gerald Loy (men’s open), Aeron John Lanuza (men’s production), and Stefanie Kathrene Lee (women’s standard) completed the collection with three bronzes.
