When the game hung in the balance and redemption beckoned, Paul Francisco answered the call.
After struggling all game and missing a potential game-winner in regulation, the National University senior found his rhythm when it mattered most.
And his performance led the Bulldogs past the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, 71-66, in overtime to close the first round of the UAAP Season 88 Men’s Basketball Tournament on top, Saturday afternoon at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
For much of regulation, Francisco had a forgettable outing, scoring just three points and visibly hesitating on open looks.
But when overtime came, something changed.
Drawing strength from his Filipino family — his uncle, aunt, and cousin who traveled from San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan, to watch him play — the Fil-Canadian forward rediscovered his confidence and took over the extra period.
“I just thank them for coming because they truly boosted my confidence and gave me the energy to come through for my team,” said Francisco, who finished with 13 points, one rebound, and one steal.
Francisco erupted for all 10 of NU’s points in overtime, including back-to-back triples that sealed the game with 38.1 seconds left, 71-66.
Ateneo misfired on all three of its long-range attempts in the closing moments, allowing NU to pull off its third straight win and secure a 6-1 record — the best in the first round, with its lone loss coming to UP last October 4.
“I just asked for composure and patience, and the confidence to do what the coaches needed me to do,” Francisco said. “Throughout the game, I told myself they’d want me to take the open shot because I was passing them up earlier and didn’t look confident.”
The 24-year-old Ecole Kelvin High School product’s performance was more than just a stat line — it was a breakthrough moment.
In past games where his relatives were in the stands, Francisco admitted he rarely delivered. This time, he flipped the script.
“Usually when they come to watch and I don’t play well, they have a lot to say,” he said with a laugh.
“But I think today, I’m just glad that they came to watch and I performed pretty well.”
The victory, powered by Francisco’s clutch showing, not only solidified NU’s place atop the standings but also showcased the Bulldogs’ composure under pressure — a trait that head coach Jeff Napa has long demanded from his squad.
Still, Francisco knows the job isn’t done.
“Coach Jeff always emphasizes not to be content with where we are now,” he shared.
“We’ll just keep working hard in practice. Even if we’re at the top spot, everyone’s aiming for us, so we have to prepare and get better for the second round.”
