Despite his promising potential and commendable skills as a mixed martial artist, Filipino phenom Jhanlo Sangiao experienced a harsh reality check at the hands of Mongolia’s Enkh-Orgil Baatarkhuu on Saturday.
The young Sangiao tapped to a kimura at the hands of his veteran foe in the second round during ONE Fight Night 13, which took place at the legendary Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
The bout ended with 2:53 left in the second stanza.
The 21-year-old son of Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao had garnered a considerable reception due to his stellar performances in previous matches, but this time around, he was met with a challenging adversary that ultimately handed him his first career defeat.
Baatarkhuu shrugged off a lackluster start to bounce back in the second round, operating behind his superior grappling to submit Sangiao with a wrenching Kimura lock.
Sangiao drew first blood in the opening minute of the encounter as Baatarkhuu buckled when he absorbed a staggering head kick from the highly-touted prospect.
Following a brief interaction on the mats, Sangiao picked up where he left off on the feet as his counterpunches landed with authority to quash Baatarkhuu’s aggressive attempt to change the tide of the proceedings.
Towards the end of the first round, Baatarkhuu sliced through with a left elbow shot and then changed levels to let his calculated ground control do the work for him to contain Sangiao.
In the second stanza, it became apparent that Sangiao was facing a formidable opponent who had done his homework and prepared meticulously for the encounter.
Demonstrating his resilience and composure, Baatarkhuu took the fight to the ground once more and secured a dominant position that left Sangiao with no escape route.
Baatarkhuu swiftly transitioned into a kimura submission hold, applying relentless pressure on the arm and leaving Sangiao with no option but to tap out.
With the scintillating victory, Baatarkhuu improved his professional record to 10-2 and attained his third career victory by way of submission.
Moreover, the protégé of former ONE featherweight titleholder Narantungalag Jadambaa earned a $50,000 performance bonus as he extended his winning streak against Filipino fighters in ONE Championship to three.
On the other hand, Sangiao downgraded his standing to 6-1 with the heartbreaking defeat to Baatarkhuu.
