Amiel Acido and Daniel Padilla put on a show during the seventh day of the NCAA Season 99 Juniors Basketball Tournament on Wednesday at the Filoil Ecooil Centre.
Acido produced a triple-double leading University of Perpetual Help DALTA to a 102-84 rout of Jose Rizal University while Padilla dropped his career-high, powering defending champion Colegio de San Juan de Letran to a 106-85 whipping of Arellano University.
In this season’s first triple-double performance, Acido dropped 17 points along with a staggering 18 rebounds and 10 assists.
“Sabi nga po ni Coach (Joph Cleopas) treat ko yung game na ‘to as our last game. Nagtiwala lang po ako sa teammates ko, sa coaches ko, at sa sistema,” the Junior Alta said.
Padilla did the heavy lifting for the Squires on offense with 28 markers off an impressive 72-percent shooting clip from the field in a game that saw Letran lead by as much as 35 points.
Both the Juniors Altas and the Squires, along with the Mapua Red Robins who beat the Lyceum Junior Pirates 67-52 earlier in the day, sit atop the standings with identical 6-1 records.
Other Squires who delivered were Jolo Mendoza who had a career game, grabbing a whopping 22 rebounds to go along with his 19 markers, and Jonathan Manalili, copping 14 points and nine assists.
Supporting Acido were Jan Pagulayan, who had a team-high 24 points, and Jhames Daep with 16 of his own.
Mapua, meanwhile, was led by Lawrence Mangubat’s 16 markers and five caroms.
Also taking wins on Wednesday were San Beda-Rizal and San Sebastian with the former dropping Emilio Aguinaldo College, 51-44, while the latter shocked La Salle Green Hills, 76-67.
With the win, the Staglets kept a one-game lead over the Red Cubs with a 5-2 record for solo fourth in the 10-team league.
Rion Porcadas led the way for the Golden Staglets with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds while Jhun Penaverde tallied 19 markers to put San Sebastian at 5-2.
For the Greenies, Guillian Quines nearly had a double-double of his own, notching 22 markers and nine caroms.
The Red Cubs held the Brigadiers to just five points in the third quarter, setting a new league low for points in a quarter.
