NCAA 98: Paraiso, Sangalang power Letran rout of Perps for fourth straight win


Colegio de San Juan de Letran opened its second round with a dominating wire-to-wire win against University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, 74-59, on Tuesday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

The Knights extended their win streak to four, 7-3, while the Altas are now on a four-game skid, dropping to 4-6.

“Sayang yung three-game winning streak na nilaro namin before ng break. So sabi namin sana ituloy lang natin yung runs natin,” said the Knights head coach Bonnie Tan.

Up by 10 markers going into the payoff period, Letran stepped on the gas pedal and sparked a 21-2 run in the first seven minutes of the quarter led by Brent Paraiso.

Paolo Javilionar gave the Knights their biggest of the ball game, scoring a basket under the rim, 71-43 with 3:07 remaining.

Letran dominated the perimeter points, with 33 compared to Perpetual’s 12.

14 of 15 players who played for the Knights were able to score from the game led by Paraiso and Louie Sangalang who both had plus-32 in the box plus/minus.

The former had 16 points, seven rebounds, and three assists while the latter finished with 10 markers and 10 boards.

Also for the Knights, Javilionar had a game-high 12 boards together with eight markers.

Jielo Razon led Perpetual with 13 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while Rey Barcuma added 11 markers, six boards, and two dimes.

Kim Aurin did not play on this one.

The Knights are on a four-game winning streak, 7-3, while the Altas are now 4-6.

No final announcement yet from the league if Letran’s match against Arellano University (4-5) will push through on Friday. As for Perpetual, they’ll be back on Saturday against San Beda University (6-3) at 3 PM.
