NCAA 98: Maligmat, Dolorito lead way as Lyceum romps San Sebastian for second win

Lyceum of the Philippines University secured its second straight win in the NCAA Season 98 Women’s Volleyball Tournament, defeating the San Sebastian College-Recoletos in straight sets, 25-14, 25-16, 25-21, on Friday at San Andres Sports Complex.

Jewel Maligmat led the Lady Pirates with 10 points, while Johna Dolorito supplied 10 points and five excellent digs.

Marcela Rivas produced 13 of 17 excellent digs, and Venice Puzon added 10 excellent sets to go with three aces.

Despite a rally by San Sebastian in the third set, Jewel Maligmat’s back-to-back attacks gave her team the 23-20 cushion, and an error from the Lady Stags set up the game at match point.

Katherine Santos paced the Lady Stags with 10 points, seven excellent digs, and three excellent receptions.

San Sebastian remained winless after two games.

Meanwhile, two of the bottom teams from last season duked it out in a five-set affair.

As the dust settled, Mapua University emerged victorious over Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 25-19, 25-16, 14-25, 24-26,16-14.

The Lady Cardinals’ Roxie Dela Cruz and Nicole Ong led the charge, scoring 21 and 13 points, respectively.

The Lady Cardinals dominated the first two sets, but the Lady Knights made a comeback, winning the third and fourth sets to force a fifth-set decider.

In a nail-biting finish, Hannah De Guzman’s spike tied the score at 14-14, but a block by Ong set up the match point.

An error from the Lady Knights sealed the victory for Mapua, who showed a well-rounded performance with setter Trixie Gojol registering 12 excellent digs and 11 excellent sets, libero Vanessa Basas chiming in with 15 excellent digs and 15 excellent receptions, and Chenie Batac contributing 11 points.
