For the second straight year, Mika Reyes will barely get a day off, as she starts preparing for another grind with Philippine Women’s National Volleyball Team.
Fresh off a heartbreaking title series with Petron in the 2018 Chooks to Go-Philippine Superliga Invitational Cup, the 24-year-old middle blocker was unusually calm when asked about playing for flag and country in the upcoming Asian Games in Indonesia.
There is still immense pressure on the former DLSU Lady Spiker, but not having to serve as team captain this time around offers her reprieve.
“Ako mas masasabi ko na mas magaan ‘yung pakiramdam ko kasi papasok ako na hindi ganoon kalaki ‘yung responsibilidad,” said the native of Pulilan, Bulacan, who skippered the 2017 SEA Games squad.
“Aminado naman ako na last year na ang bigat ng binigay sa akin and nagulat talaga ako. Ngayon another opportunity na binigay ulit sa akin ni Lord para makasama and mapasali sa national team.”
With their training camp in Japan set to begin on August 5, Reyes wants to forge a connection with each of her teammates before ending the country’s 36-year absence in Asian Games volleyball.
“Personally naman, kailangan ko magkaroon ng chemistry with the team kasi ngayon iba-iba na ulit kasama ko.”
