Martin Nguyen eyes showdown with Bibiano Fernandes in hopes of third crown

In a span of three months, Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen (10-1) has turned from a bright prospect to a two-division world champion.

After a stunning knockout of Marat Gafurov in Malaysia to win the ONE Featherweight World Championship, the 28-year-old followed it up by silencing the Manila crowd with a second round knockout win over Eduard Folayang last Friday to win the lightweight crown.

But Nguyen is not stopping there, as he plans to shed 20 pounds to face bantamweight kingpin Bibiano Fernandes to become mixed martial arts’ first-ever three-division champion.

“I want Bibiano a hundred percent next year. My weight is all over the place,” quipped Nguyen, who has won his last six fights.

However, the potential bout will hold equally potential problems for ONE Championship, as it would hold up both the featherweight and lightweight divisions.

When pressed about this, promotion Chief Executive Officer Chatri Sityodtong says he is not thinking about it for the meantime, saying that he is open to the super fight.

“I haven’t thought about it yet. Let Martin enjoy this moment and we’ll talk about it soon,” the amiable promoter said.

Still, the Vietnamese-Australian warrior just wants to continue inspiring people and roll on with his hot streak.

“I’m not only here to win, I want to make history and Bibiano is the next step.”
