While all eyes will be on the showdown between ONE Strawweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan and ONE Atomweight World Champion “Unstoppable” Angela Lee, there is plenty of intrigue surrounding the other protagonists of ONE Fight Night 2.
The card, which airs live this Saturday morning, 1 October, is loaded from top to bottom with former and future World Champions, all poised to make an impact at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
With that, we look at the three major storylines aside from the ONE Strawweight World Title clash between Xiong and Lee.
ONE’s Submission Grappling Division Will Crown Its First King
ONE Championship has invested a lot in submission grappling over the past year, and now it’s time to up the ante.
The Home of Martial Arts will award the inaugural ONE Flyweight Submission Grappling World Title to the winner of the trilogy bout between Mikey Musumeci and Cleber Sousa.
Musumeci has already shown what he can do after submitting Masakazu Imanari in his organizational debut.
This submission grappling World Title matchup is certain to be the first of many as ONE continues to uplift the sport.
Martin Nguyen Continues His Climb Back To Featherweight Gold
After suffering the first consecutive losses of his career, former ONE Featherweight and Lightweight World Champion Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen finally captured a win in his last performance.
Now he’ll look to keep that momentum going against dangerous Ilya Ferymanov in a featherweight MMA clash. Another win here for the Vietnamese-Australian could certainly put him on newly crowned World Champion Tang Kai’s radar.
Stacked Lightweight Division Evolves
While ONE Lightweight World Champion Christian “The Warrior” Lee waits for his next challenger, it’s been a free-for-all in one of the organization’s most stacked divisions.
Two days after no. 5-ranked Saygid Izagakhmaev dominated Zhang Lipeng at ONE 161 to prove his case as the next rightful contender, it will be Timofey Nastyukhin and Halil Amir’s turn to impress as they clash in what is expected to be a short bout.
Nastyukhin has long been one of the promotion’s most lethal strikers, owning stoppages over some of the biggest names in the division, like former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard Folayang and multiple-time MMA World Champ Eddie Alvarez.
The Russian gets a perfect dance partner in Amir, who makes his promotional debut but has already proven to be a finisher with seven wins coming from either KO or TKO.
A win for Nastyukhin further muddies the already loaded weight class. But on the flipside, an impressive win from Amir could easily catapult him among the division’s best.
The lead card for ONE Fight Night 2 airs live on One Sports+ at 8 a.m. (PHT) on Saturday, 1 October. The main card will follow on One Sports+ at 10 a.m. PHT. One Sports will air a delayed showing at 10:30 p.m. PHT.
