As the Filipinas gear up for the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, head coach Mark Torcaso is confident that the team’s mix of experience, youthful talent, and unwavering commitment can translate into a podium finish.
Torcaso sees the balance between seasoned veterans and rising stars as crucial not just for immediate success, but for the long-term growth of the national program. He highlighted the synergy between both generations, noting their readiness to perform at the senior international level.
“The girls have been excellent,” said the Australian mentor during an open training session on November 29. “There’s a good blend of some of our really talented U17 players who have grown up a lot over the past few years. I think people will see in the next couple of weeks that they’re really close to being ready, which is fantastic.
“It’s also been great to have Serena [Bolden] and Quinley [Quezada] with us.”
The training camp leading up to the Games has strengthened the team’s confidence and belief.
Torcaso described the camp as “excellent,” with the players focused on matching or surpassing their bronze-medal finish from the 31st SEA Games.
For Torcaso, the drive goes beyond mere competition. It’s rooted in a shared commitment to each other and to representing the country.
This collective motivation is what makes him optimistic about the Filipinas’ chances in Thailand.
“It’s been a really good camp so far,” he said. “The girls are excited to go to the SEA Games. We believe we’re going to come home with a medal.
“There’s a feeling among the group that they’re ready to do this and to bring something back for the country.”
The coach’s confidence also comes from the belief that surrounds the team — from staff, fans, and the players themselves.
He believes that this optimism translates into stronger effort and sharper execution on the pitch.
Torcaso views a potential medal as an opportunity to honor the steadfast support the team has received over the years, while rewarding the dedication of everyone involved in the program.
“I’m confident because there’s a feeling in this camp, and even over the last few months, that the girls really want to do this for each other and bring a medal home for our people,” he said.
“People have said, ‘We’re going to get it this year,’ and I feel it too. I want to repay all the people who have been committed to this team for so many years. We want to make sure we bring something back for them.”
