Maddie Madayag scores first points; Jaja Santiago leads Osaka to 11th straight win in SV.League

A day after making her debut, Maddie Madayag scored her first official point for Kurobe, while Jaja Santiago returned for Osaka in sweeping victories during the 2024-25 Japan SV.League on Sunday.

Madayag was once again utilized as a service specialist in three sets as the Aqua Fairies stunned the higher-ranked Victorina Himeji, 25-23, 32-30, 25-22, at the Ariso Dome.

In the marathon second frame, the 5-foot-11 middle blocker stepped up to the service line and delivered a short serve that dropped perfectly in the middle of the Victorina defenders, earning her first career point in Japan.

Dutch import Iris Scholten led Kurobe’s charge with 19 points, while Rimi Kaneda added 13 as the Aqua Fairies secured their seventh win in 22 matches.

Despite Arisa Inoue’s impressive 27-point effort, Himeji fell to 13-7, now tied for fifth place with NEC.

Meanwhile, after sitting out the previous game, Santiago returned to action and made her presence felt as the Marvelous handed the Gunma Green Wings their 18th consecutive loss, 25-16, 25-18, 25-14.

Santiago, also known as Sachi Minowa, tallied 10 points, highlighted by an efficient spiking rate (7-of-12) and three blocks.

Team captain Mizuki Tanaka top-scored for Osaka with 17 points, propelling the Marvelous to their 11th straight victory in the tournament, which features the 14 best teams in Japan.

In another match, Denso secured its sixth consecutive win with a commanding 25-22, 25-17, 25-19 victory over Yamagata at the INPEX Sakata Arena.

Filipino setter Jia De Guzman, regarded as one of the Philippines’ best, sat out once again as the Airybees faced Aranmare, the league’s 13th-ranked team with a 2-20 record.
