La Salle surges past Perbanas Institute in commanding WUBS 2024 debut


De La Salle University dominated in the opening game of its 2024 World University Basketball Series by Sun Chlorella campaign on Saturday, outclassing Indonesia’s Perbanas Institute, 117-71, at Yoyogi National Stadium Second Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan.

The defending champions, who were coming off a stellar stint at the Kadayawan Invitational Basketball Tournament against PBA teams, ran roughshod over the Indonesians, leading 30-13 to start the contest and never relinquishing their double-digit lead until the final buzzer.

The duo of Kevin Quiambao and Mike Phillips led the way for the Green Archers, with Quiambao recording a double-double of 16 points and 16 rebounds, while Phillips added 15 points and eight rebounds.

Four other Archers scored in double figures, with Henry Agunnane finishing with 13 points, Vhoris Marasigan contributing 14 points, four rebounds, two steals, and an assist, JC Malalag adding 12 points, and Raven Cortez chipping in 11 points, four rebounds, and a block.

Point guard Justin Buenaventura also contributed, producing four points and three rebounds in 16 minutes of play.

La Salle will face the winner of the National Chengchi University-Nippon Sports Science University game on Sunday.

For Perbanas, Sandy Ibrahim, Argus Sanyudy, and Argus Sanyudy each scored 11 points.
