PASSI — They call her the Bionic Ilongga for a reason.
And on an unforgettable Saturday night in front of her fellow Ilonggos, ZUS Coffee star Jovelyn Gonzaga lived up to the name, embodying every bit of the grit and heart that earned her the moniker.
“Sobrang uncertain ako na matapos ’to, na makalaro, kasi nga ang sakit talaga,” said the Gonzaga, her voice trembling as she wiped her tears off her face, after their hard-fought, five-set win over Creamline.
The pain was evident in the way the 33-year-old, battle-tested winger winced and twitched — but you wouldn’t have known it from the way she dove for every loose ball and unloaded with power on every swing.
Gonzaga was actually listed as questionable before the match, uncertain if she could push through with what felt like a thousand knives relentlessly piercing her back all at once.
But deep down, she already knew the answer. She knew she’d regret letting the moment slip away, especially with the rare chance to play in front of her fellow Ilonggos.
And so, she played.
The veteran opposite spiker powered through with no complaints, seemingly unfazed by the lingering discomfort in her every movement. She put on a quiet display of strength and unwavering grace that captures what it truly means to be an Ilongga.
Gonzaga didn’t just play in front of them — she embodied them.
“Sobrang proud ako, kasi bago mag-start ang game may iniinda ako sa likod. So hindi ko talaga alam kung mag-su-survive ko ‘yung set,” said the product of Central Philippine University in Jaro.
“Magsisisi ako. At the end of the day, magsisisi ako kung bakit hindi ako naglaro. Gusto ko na ilaban din sila, the way na nilalaban din nila ‘yung team,” she added.
But the fans inside the City of Passi Arena weren’t the only ones moved by Gonzaga’s sheer determination and fighting spirit.
Playing at less than a hundred percent, Gonzaga undeniably left the biggest impact in the Thunderbelles’ 24-26, 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 15-11 triumph over the Cool Smashers, not just with her performance, but by simply showing up and fighting through pain.
“Sobrang thankful ako sa teammates kasi grabe ‘yung step up nila bawat isa. Naa-amaze nga ako, actually sobra akong naa-amaze sa pinerform nila ‘yun, it’s a total team effort from the coaching staff to the team,” said Gonzaga, who finished with 12 points.
“So sobrang thankful din ako sa team. Ako, binabalik ko sa team ‘yung panalo ngayon. Hanggang sa last point, sobrang sarap sa pakiramdam na nakuha mo ‘yung panalo na sila ‘yung kasama mo maghirap,” she added.
Indeed, it was a special night — not just for Gonzaga and ZUS Coffee, who both earned their first win over the 10-time champions — but also for all the Ilonggos who witnessed it firsthand.
“Sobrang special. From iba-ibang teams na napuntahan ko, ‘di ko natatalo ‘yung Creamline. So sobrang thankful ako na sa Iloilo, nakuha namin. Alam naman natin kung anong kaya ng Creamline laruin,” she said.
It was already a performance to remember, not because of the numbers she put up, but because of the toughness she showed throughout. She played through the pain, pushed past her limits, and left it all on the floor for her fellow Ilonggos.
“Sobrang laking bagay sa’kin na in front of my fellow Ilonggos na napanalo namin ‘yung game,” Gonzaga said.
It was the kind of showing that would make it easy to understand if she sits out tomorrow’s match to rest.
But knowing Gonzaga, the Bionic Ilongga might just lace up again — all for the love of the game, and for the people she calls her own.
Jovelyn Gonzaga fought back tears as she shared her uncertainty due to a back injury 😢
Not sure if she can return soon, but she’s super thankful to her team for stepping up big against Creamline 🏐
