How the Ramon Fernandez PBA Finals trophy honors ‘El Presidente’

Basketball legend Ramon Fernandez’s storied career will be immortalized in the newly designed trophy for the PBA Press Corps Finals Most Valuable Player.

The award, set to debut after the ongoing PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup Finals between San Miguel and TNT, features a design that celebrates Fernandez’s unparalleled achievements in Asia’s first professional league.

The trophy bears Fernandez’s likeness, with dimensions carefully inspired by his remarkable career.

Standing 19 inches tall with a four-inch base, the design pays homage to his record 19 PBA championships and his distinction as the league’s first four-time MVP.

A 15-inch figure of Fernandez commemorates his 1989 Grand Slam triumph with San Miguel Beer during his 15th season.

Meanwhile, the circular base, with a 19-inch circumference and 6.04-inch diameter, references his jersey number from the latter part of his career and his playing height of 6-foot-4.

Current PBA Press Corps officers conceptualized and finalized the trophy, with PBA head of statistics Fidel Mangonon III providing detailed design specifications and historical context.

Raymundo’s Awards, known for crafting high-quality trophies, was commissioned to bring the design to life.

Fernandez, affectionately known as “El Presidente,” gave his blessing for the award to carry his name, adding prestige to the MVP honor first introduced in the 1996 All-Filipino Cup Finals.

He is expected to personally present the trophy at the conclusion of the title series and will also receive a duplicate as a token of appreciation.

Only then will the Ramon Fernandez Trophy be officially unveiled in its full glory.
