Gilas Women’s World Cup Qualis hopes dashed after crushing loss to Hungary

Coming off a valiant 74-77 loss to world No. 8 Brazil, Gilas Pilipinas Women were dealt a harsh defeat 24 hours later.

The Philippines suffered a crushing 60-97 defeat at the hands of world No. 16 Hungary, virtually ending their hopes of advancing to the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers early Wednesday morning (Manila time) at BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.

Dropping to a 0-2 record with just one game left against Senegal on Thursday, the Philippines is all but eliminated from contention.

Hungary stormed out of the gate, leading 23-14 at the end of the first quarter before unleashing a huge 28-point second period while limiting the Philippines to just 10, resulting in a commanding 51-24 lead.

The lead grew to as high as 39 points.

Hungary was simply too dominant, out-rebounding the Philippines 57-24 while shooting an impressive 57.78 percent from the field.

Afril Bernardino and Ella Fajardo were the only double-digit scorers for the Philippines with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Jack Animam was limited to just six points on 3-of-7 shooting and added only one rebound.

Hungary, which evened its record to 1-1, was led by Agnes Torok, who scored 25 points on 10-of-11 shooting.

Reka Lelik and Debora Dubei also contributed 13 points each.

Philippines 60 – Bernardino 11, Fajardo 10, Dela Rosa 9, Panganiban 9, Animam 6, Berberabe 5, Ozar 4, Castillo 3, Yumul 3, Pontejos 0, Nolasco 0.
