When Ricci Rivero entered the Meralco Gym during first session of Gilas Pilipinas this year, he was a bit hesitant. The 19-year-old did not know if he will be welcomed or even be allowed to enter the complex.
But as Gilas always does with its visitors, Rivero was allowed inside and was even introduced by team manager Butch Antonio to the brass of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
“They came in their own volition and sa akin naman, we’re all inclusive,” shared Gilas head coach Chot Reyes about Ricci who was accompanied by his father Paolo.
“Wala naman tayong di pinapayagan, di pinapapunta.”
The 6-foot-2 wingman, who averaged 14.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.33 assists during the UAAP Season 80 Men’s Basketball tournament, was sought after by the SBP, including its chairman emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan. However, with the De La Salle University Green Archers in the midst of a rebuilding, the school begged off all its student-athletes to take part in this exercise.
For his part, Reyes had to explain to the Rivero family that Ricci’s exclusion was out of their hands as Ricci really wanted to be part of the team and represent the country. Apparently, Ricci only found out on social media that the school barred them to be part of Gilas for the time being.
“They’ve really been in touch since the list came out. We had to explain the situation with the school and they asked if they can tryout, but it has to be something we talk about with their school,” Reyes furthered.
Still, the SBP is not giving up as the team’s officials are planning to talk to La Salle for a remedy.
“That’s a different discussion altogether. It remains to be seen what will happen in the next couple of weeks.”
