Gilas Girls dominate Malaysia in SEABA qualis behind Gabby Ramos’ double-double

Gabby Ramos flaunted her pedigree, leading the Gilas Pilipinas Girls to another dominant win in the FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup 2024 SEABA Qualifiers, this time taking down Malaysia, 100-68, on Saturday at Ratchaburi Gymnasium.

Ramos had been part of the 2022 Under-16 batch that placed third in the Asia Cup Division B. Today, she tallied a monster double-double with 29 points and 19 rebounds, giving the Philippines a 2-0 record.

The 6-foot Filipino-American shot 12-of-18 from the field while also nabbing three steals.

This was a vengeful win for the Philippines, which lost to Malaysia in the semifinals of the U18 Division B tournament two years ago in overtime, 66-65.

That batch was led by the likes of Liane Loon and Kate Bobadilla.

This time around, this batch of Gilas Girls is aiming to move up to Division A when the second division tournament takes place in Shenzhen, China.

Ramos was at the forefront of Gilas’ attack right from the start in the wire-to-wire win, scoring nine of her points in the opening frame and helping Gilas erect a 32-20 lead.

Ava Fajardo, Naomi Panganiban, Ashlyn Abong, and Alicia Villanueva joined the fray, helping the Filipinas take a lead that went as high as 36 points.

Ava, younger sister of Gilas Women mainstay Ella, tallied 14 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists, while Panganiban fired 13 points.

The National University Nazareth School duo of Abong and Villanueva chipped in 13 and 10 points apiece, with Villanueva also grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out five assists.

Villanueva was the one who sparked Gilas in their 103-58 win over host Thailand yesterday, dropping 25 points.
