Gilas’ Camille Clarin, LA Tenorio moved to mentor next generation after Sabrina Ionescu encounter

Sabrina Ionescu’s visit to the Philippines isn’t just a star-studded appearance — it’s a source of inspiration for aspiring basketball players across the country.

For Gilas Women 3×3 standout Camille Clarin and Gilas Boys head coach LA Tenorio, the arrival of the WNBA sensation offers a powerful reminder that Filipino athletes can dream big and reach the sport’s highest stage.

Ionescu, the first Nike athlete to visit the Philippines since the COVID-19 pandemic, is currently in the country for her first international tour.

The Philippines marks her first stop before heading to China and Hong Kong.

For Clarin, a three-time UAAP women’s basketball champion, the New York Liberty guard’s visit signifies more than just a promotional tour — it highlights the growing prominence of women’s basketball on the global stage.

The 23-year-old national team mainstay emphasized the significance of Ionescu’s presence, noting how it can inspire young Filipina ballers to believe they can reach the sport’s highest level.

“Yeah, to see is to believe. I mean, especially here in the Philippines, the women’s basketball scene isn’t as glorified as the men’s,” Clarin shared during Ionescu’s skills camp at the Nike Courtyard last Monday.

“So I think for Sabrina to be here, the first Nike athlete to come into our country after the pandemic, I think it’s great to show that they’re really taking the women’s game seriously now.”

A trailblazer in women’s basketball, Ionescu is engaging with Filipino fans through various activities during her three-day stay, aiming to inspire and empower the next generation of female players.

“And for them to put a face to the name, I think it’s such a great experience for the young girls to see that with that work, with that dedication to the game, things like this are possible,” Clarin added.

Tenorio, who now leads the Gilas Boys program, echoed Clarin’s sentiments. He stressed that the presence of Ionescu — and other global basketball stars who have visited the Philippines — plays a crucial role in nurturing young athletes and strengthening the country’s rich basketball culture.

“It’s really important, especially for aspiring basketball players, to see athletes like Sabrina. It’s very important because young players can draw motivation and inspiration from them,” Tenorio said during Ionescu’s panel talk at Nike Fort BGC.

“The way they talk, the way they handle pressure, the way they work hard — just like Kobe Bryant’s Mamba Mentality — the young kids can adopt that mindset.

“It’s very important, and I think nowadays, young players are very lucky to see so many international athletes coming here, especially here in Manila,” added the Barangay Ginebra guard, noting that such opportunities were rare during his youth.

Ionescu’s Philippine tour continues on Tuesday with a special showcase at the historic Smart Araneta Coliseum, featuring a three-point challenge.

She will conclude her visit on Wednesday at the Girls Got Game Home Court at Sacred Heart Academy in Sta. Maria, Bulacan.
