Despite historic rookie season, Shaina Nitura remains hungry for more improvements

Shaina Nitura just completed a rookie season in UAAP women’s volleyball that will likely remain unmatched for years to come.

But for the 20-year-old outside hitter from Adamson University, her best may still be ahead of her. The key to her future success lies in her own hands.

Nitura made this bold statement on Sunday after Adamson capped off its Season 87 campaign with a dominant 25-13, 25-21, 25-18 win over University of the Philippines at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“Hindi ko alam kasi depende ‘yan kung paano ko papaghirapan at paano ko pupursigihin yung mga next seasons kasi I cannot say, God’s will na lang din talaga. Siya lang may alam. Pursigi lang, ingat lang din, iwas injury, tapos disiplina sa sarili,” Nitura said when asked if she could continue to improve after a record-breaking rookie season.

It was truly a season to remember for the Adamson homegrown talent. She took the UAAP by storm, breaking multiple records — all in her very first year.

In her debut match in the collegiate division, Nitura posted 33 points against Ateneo de Manila University in a five-set thriller, setting a new rookie single-game scoring record.

That was just the beginning of what would become a sensational 14-game journey for the Cainta, Rizal native.

In the Lady Falcons’ final game of the first round, Nitura delivered an astounding 38-point performance, setting a new UAAP women’s volleyball scoring record, surpassing the previous 35-point games by Ateneo’s Alyssa Valdez and UST’s Sisi Rondina.

She followed that up by breaking the single-season scoring record in the division, racking up 37 points in a win over Far Eastern University. That brought her total to 314 points, surpassing the previous record of 312 held by Valdez in Season 77.

Nitura wasn’t done yet.

In her 13th game, she shattered the season-scoring record across all divisions, surpassing UST’s Mark Alfafara’s 344-point mark set in Season 76.

After 14 matches, Nitura finished with a total of 371 points, 27 more than Alfafara’s record.

Along the way, she set another UAAP record, notching six 30-point games — another remarkable feat.

Yet, despite all the records, she remains hungry for more.

“Lahat,” she said when asked what areas she wants to improve.

“Pati sa attitude towards others, sa team, and sa coaches.”
