Francis Tolentino, an avid sports enthusiast and brother of Philippine Olympic Committee President and Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, is making significant strides in promoting sports among the Filipino youth.
With initiatives aimed at cultivating talent, leadership, and a sense of nationalism, Tolentino is driving efforts that extend far beyond the playing field.
Empowering the Youth Through ROTC Games
One of Tolentino’s most notable contributions is spearheading the Philippine Reserve Officers’ Training Course (ROTC) Games. This multi-sport event is designed to shape future leaders in sports, military service, and other fields while instilling a deeper sense of patriotism among participants.
“Beyond being a sports event, the aim of the ROTC Games is to develop the skills and talents and cultivate a deeper sense of nationalism among the youth,” Tolentino said.
The tournament, which saw over a thousand reservists and cadets from across the country participate, was a resounding success.
“I see future leaders emerging from the ranks in sports, military service, and even other professions. All these things considered, this multi-sport event is truly an enormous success,” Tolentino added.
Advancing Women’s Sports
At the local level, Tolentino is championing women’s basketball through the formation of the Cavite TOL Patriots, a team that will represent his home province in the inaugural season of the Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL).
“The formation of the team signals a new era for women’s sports in the country,” Tolentino remarked during tryouts held on November 23 and 24 in Tagaytay City, where over 100 female basketball players competed for roster spots.
The tryouts, led by Coaches Norman Manguinao and Angelica Valera of Cavite State University, were also graced by WMPBL official John Kallos, who inspired the players to keep pursuing their basketball dreams.
“With more avenues being opened, it is my hope to advance the skill and competitive level of Filipina basketball players in order to prepare them for potential international opportunities,” Tolentino shared.
The WMPBL’s maiden tournament is set to tip off in January 2025, marking another milestone in the development of women’s sports in the country.
Fostering Unity in Mindanao
Tolentino’s advocacy transcends sports as he recently commended the Mindanao Association of State Tertiary Schools for fostering camaraderie through its annual sports and cultural events.
“Through events like this, we see the strength of Mindanao’s youth, its culture, and its ability for collaboration. In a world often divided by differences, your efforts to unite diverse communities through sports and culture resonate deeply,” Tolentino said.
He urged participants to uphold fairness, respect, and camaraderie, emphasizing that they are part of a greater community working toward shared goals.
Tolentino highlighted the importance of building friendships that transcend boundaries and celebrating diversity as a source of pride and strength.
Building a Stronger Nation Through Sports
For Tolentino, sports development is more than just creating athletes—it is about nation-building.
“When our youth engage in sports, they learn values essential to nation-building: discipline, teamwork, resilience, and pride in representing their country,” he said.
He underscored the transformative power of sports, from uniting communities in barangay tournaments to inspiring national pride through international competition.
“The impact is already palpable. Sports continue to shape national identity and social cohesion,” Tolentino said.
With his comprehensive approach to sports development, Tolentino is setting the stage for a brighter future for Filipino youth.
“Every young Filipino is not just a potential champion but a vital contributor to the country’s quest for excellence and national pride,” Tolentino concluded.
