The Filipinas now face a must-win situation in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026.
The Philippines suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat against South Korea on Thursday at the Gold Coast Stadium in Australia, falling to 0-2 in the continental tournament, where World Cup qualification is on the line.
The result left the Philippines at the bottom of Group A with two losses and a -4 goal differential, with Australia and Iran yet to play.
To stay alive, the Filipinas must beat Iran on Sunday as the two teams vie for one of the two best third-place spots that advance to the quarterfinals.
Jeon Yugyeong and Park Soojeong scored within the opening 15 minutes, putting the Taeguk Ladies firmly in control and on the verge of securing a knockout-stage berth.
Mun Eun-ju added a third goal in the 56th minute from a corner kick, further deepening the Filipinas’ woes as they slipped to the bottom of Group A with two losses and a -4 goal differential.
Head coach Mark Torcaso made two changes to the lineup with Arianna Markey and Isabella Pasion earning places in the starting XI in place of Alexa Pino and Jaclyn Sawicki, who was not among the substitutes on the bench.
South Korea asserted its ascendancy early and took the lead in the 12th minute. Kim Shin-ji delivered a perfectly weighted pass inside the box to Jeon, who calmly sent the ball past Olivia McDaniel for the opening goal.
Park doubled the advantage three minutes later with a strike from the edge of the penalty area that left McDaniel rooted to her spot.
The Philippines created a few chances but was unable to convert.
Carleigh Frilles’ shot from outside the box just before halftime was saved, while Sara Eggesvik failed to capitalize on a headed pass across the goal from Katrina Guillou in the 48th minute.
Guillou also had a chance in the 74th minute off a feed from Angela Beard, but her attempt went wide of the target.
After the match, Beard acknowledged the challenge of containing a team like Korea.
“We were trying to sit in a deep block to prevent these talented footballers from getting in between spaces, getting one, two seconds that they need to really create moments for themselves,” said Beard after the match. “Unfortunately, all you need is one or two laps of judgment here and there, and they break down a whole block.
“We’ll pick it up, and we’ll pull it together again,” added Beard, whose mother hails from Cebu. “We’re in a tough group. We always knew it was going to be tough.”
