FIBA picks Philippines to host 2027 Women’s Asia Cup

The Philippines is ready to take center stage in Asian women’s basketball as it has officially been named the host of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2027, the FIBA Regional Office-Asia announced following the FIBA Asia Board meeting held on June 26, 2025.

This marks the country’s first time to host the women’s continental tournament, and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is eager to make the most of the opportunity.

“The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is proud to be the host for the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2027,” said SBP President Al Panlilio.

“The federation has always been an ardent partner of FIBA in prioritizing the growth of women’s basketball, and it’s about time for the Philippines to do even more.”

The announcement comes amid a wave of momentum for the women’s basketball scene in the country.

The launch of a professional league in the Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League, alongside a growing number of Filipina players earning stints overseas, signals a new phase of development for the sport.

“The timing is perfect for the Philippines to host this competition,” Panlilio added.

“Women’s basketball in the country currently has great momentum behind it.”

The tournament, which brings together the top national teams from across the continent, is expected to boost awareness, interest, and investment in women’s hoops — something that FIBA sees as a crucial part of the sport’s development in Asia.

“We are excited to return to the Philippines for a FIBA Asia event,” said FIBA Executive Director-Asia Mr. Hagop Khajirian.

“We believe hosting the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in the Philippines, where basketball has a passionate following, will help FIBA’s efforts to promote women’s basketball in Asia. The event will also serve as a boost to the SBP’s efforts to promote women’s basketball in the Philippines.”

The Philippines previously hosted the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 in partnership with Japan and Indonesia.
