FIBA: Yumul drains nine treys, lifts Gilas U16 past Syria for second win

Kristan Yumul continued her hot-shooting to start the 2022 FIBA Women’s Under-16 Asian Championship, towing Gilas Women to a 92-86 win against Syria, Saturday at Prince Hamza Hall in Amman, Jordan.

Yumul, a product of Oxnard, drained nine triples in the contest for 33 points — tied for most points in the continental youth meet. Chen Tsai-hsin dropped 33 points back on December 3, 2019 during Chinese-Taipei’s 110-30 win over the Philippines.

And her ninth trey proved to be important in the contest.

Up by as many as 20 points, the Syrians fought back, eventually tying things up at 82-all after a couple of Simel Alahmar free throws with 2:45 remaining.

On the other end, Gabby Ramos was able to clean up a Yumul miss plus the harm to give the Philippines some cushion.

After a stop, Yumul knocked down a stepback three over the outstretched arms Suzan Backour to seal the win.

Besides Yumul, Ramos also sustained her fine form, tallying 21 points, 14 rebounds, four steals, and two blocks.

Naomi Panganiban and Sam Medina also produced all-around lines with the former finishing with 13 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and two steals while the latter tallied nine rebounds, seven assists, seven points, and two steals.

Gilas remained perfect in Group A with a 2-0 slate while dropping Syria to 1-1.

Backour led Syria with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Simel Alahmar supported her with 20 points and eight rebounds.

The Philippines can clinch top seed in the group tomorrow when it takes on Samoa (1-1), who defeated Indonesia (0-2) earlier in the day, 57-48.
