While the goal remains to reach the podium, PGJC Navy star Joeven Dela Vega admitted that achieving it will be more challenging this season with other teams retooled and bolstered by young talent entering the Spikers’ Turf.
The 2024 Invitational Conference has kicked off with surprises and shockers, as Far Eastern University-DN Steel and Savouge lead the pack with impressive 3-0 records.
FEU, along with De La Salle-EcoOil, qualified for the Spikers’ Turf after finishing 1-2 in the 2024 V-League Men’s Collegiate Challenge.
“Exciting kasi maraming malalakas. Challenging ba,” said Dela Vega regarding the race to the podium.
The Sealions started the tournament with a 2-1 record, defeating Chichi DHTSI and D’Navigators-Iloilo, while losing to the younger players of FEU.
In their match against the D’Navigators on Wednesday, Dela Vega displayed maturity and poise, unloading 20 points through 10 attacks, seven blocks, and three service aces, leading PGJC Navy to a 25-20, 25-18, 19-25, 25-19 victory.
The D’Navigators also boast youthful talent, including Barbie San Andres, Kyle Villamor, and Vince Himzon, among others.
Meanwhile, the Sealions have the oldest average age among all 10 teams at 27.3 years, with their youngest player at 24 and their oldest at 32.
Dela Vega himself will turn 28 this December.
As the team navigates this challenging season, Dela Vega emphasizes the importance of mentorship for the younger players.
He understands that sharing experiences and insights can significantly impact their growth and development in the sport.
“Sa mga kabataan, ang thoughts ko is at least may matutunan sila sa amin, sa mga matatanda na,” said the enlisted Navy personnel.
“Huwag lang tumigil sa pag-training, learnings. Kasi habang tumatanda tayo or nag-training tayo, na-apply natin mismo sa katawan natin, so madadala natin sa laro.”
