Drex “T-Rex” Zamboanga knows his opponents won’t get any easier moving forward, especially with how stacked the ONE Championship flyweight division is.
But he is up for a good challenge.
Zamboanga made his intentions known when he submitted Detchadin “Detchpool” Sornsirisuphathin in his debut at ONE: A New Breed on August 28 in Bangkok, Thailand.
He’s now part of a division that’s home to athletes like ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes, ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, and Team Lakay star Danny “The King” Kingad.
“I know that this division has the best fighters in the world, and those are the people that I want to test my skills with,” Zamboanga said.
“Being a Filipino World Champion, I want to represent the country to the best of my abilities — and that’s what I hope to do here.”
Zamboanga’s entrance to the big stage was a long time coming.
A staple in Philippine mixed martial arts, Zamboanga took matches abroad from time to time where he blew hot and cold.
Those matches helped prepare “T-Rex” for his much-awaited debut in The Home Of Martial Arts.
“I am proud to say that I did not take the easy route heading here,” Zamboanga said.
“I might have lost some [matches], but I took on very good opponents and I have learned from it. That only prepared me for this.”
Though he had an auspicious debut on the big stage, Zamboanga knows he still has plenty to work on as he aims to win it all in ONE Championship.
“I have to work on my grappling and MMA, my whole game. Although I won via submission, I’m still not satisfied with my performance,” he said.
“I want to completely work on my striking, and I want to be the number one flyweight in the world.”
